The primary UK legislation prohibiting discrimination. Protects people with disabilities (s.6) and imposes a duty to make reasonable adjustments on employers, landlords, and service providers (ss.20-22).
Where a provision, criterion or practice (PCP) puts a disabled person at a substantial disadvantage, the duty holder must take reasonable steps to avoid that disadvantage (s.20). Failure is discrimination (s.21).
Public authorities must have due regard to eliminating discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity, and fostering good relations (s.149). This is an anticipatory duty.
Claims go to the Employment Tribunal (workplace), County Court (services/premises), or the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) for systemic issues. No cap on discrimination compensation.
